Brittany Cole

Brittany Cole studied a Bachelor of Creative Industries at the University of Newcastle and graduated in 2020. During her degree she became a multidisciplinary creative practitioner and entrepreneur that attained skills in visual arts, theatre studies, web design, branding, marketing, promotion and music industry knowledge. In her third year completing a major project for the community she Co-Directed with Raven Law a live music night with talented musicians in partnership with Newcastle Music Collective and Murray's Brewery for the execution of their show Sounds In the Spotlight for October 25th 2019.

Brittany has since completed courses in music, sound engineering, digital audio editing and recording at university, it’s been a personal joy of hers to continue finding short courses and workshops outside of her degree validating ways of integrating artists into the music industry. Workshops she attended were of how to run music events and how musicians can market themselves, seeking an agency and releasing music via streaming mediums etc. These workshops by MUSICNSW and the Newcastle Music Collective have taught her to value the importance of emerging musicians in the Newcastle community. Also with rescent research and knowledge attained it can be beneficial to try and find creative ways of helping musicians become better integrated in the Newcastle region.

With previous experience volunteering for Octapod’s TINA, the University’s Drama Society and Newcastle’s acclaimed gallery The LockUp, being in those environments have further helped to identify some of the key responsibilities of working for artists and experiencing it from a real-world perspective.

She is a huge music enthusiast that thrives on helping musicians and loves collaborating with others in Newcastle which was her reason for creating her expanding Instagram @risemusicians

About SITS 2019: About Us

What was the Purpose of Sounds In the Spotlight?

Sounds in the Spotlight’s mission was to help musicians become more well-known in the local community by hosting a concert at the Civic Playhouse.

This concert was run by Brittany Cole and Raven Law, and took place in late October. It was advertised several weeks in advance with cost-effective means such as interactive social media, posters, and a trailer designed in-house by one of the co-directors, Raven. The featured musicians were Byren, Rod Coote, Megan Core, and India and the Journey to the East.

SiTS was both community-based, seeking to engage the public in the local music scene, and for-profit, with revenue going back to the musicians and directors.

Benefits for Musicians

  • Musicians will be paid

  • Free promotion and recognition for their music both online and in certain suburbs around Newcastle.

  • Collaboration and networking with other emerging musicians

  • Potential for further communication with the Newcastle Music Collective, who are helping execute the show.

  • Promotion of the event via posters, social media, etc, built image and branding for everybody involved.

  • Hosting the event at Civic Playhouse allowed the community to come together and enjoy a comfortable and entertaining environment of music in an iconic venue.

  • Created word of mouth after the event for musicians after the show completed, so that when they continue to perform elsewhere around Newcastle, spectators who have seen or heard about their music will go and watch them live or listen to their music on streaming platforms.

This project was to provide the community with an event that showcased local music and the talent that has been encouraged and fostered to prospectively continue as a cultural event, it’s a way of moving away from being a coal industry orientated city, and as a step towards the future that Newcastle is seeking to be, a creative culturally inclined society.
